Resources categories

The resources that are involved in Verbal Autopsy(VA) implementation and stepwise guidelines on how to implement VA from scratch are here are categorised in 3 groups:

  • Implementation/Program: This is a collection of resources that support in setting up and implementing Verbal Autopsy, support user training of key players (Interviewers and Supervisors) in Verbal Autopsy and program level monitoring of VA implementations i.e Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Guides etc.

  • Reports/Publications: This is a collection of published research papers or journals that are related to VA implementation as evidence of existing work across the country. They help to inform of challenges and best practices in implementing VA in Kenya setup.

  • Technical: This is a collection of technical reference materials that are involved in VA implementations. It comprises of ICT infrastructure systems setup and user guide and WHO Questionnaires.

How do you implement Verbal Autopsy?

  1. Questionnaire design:
    • Excel form design:

VA Form is designed in Excel, as is the case for all ODK Based questionnaires. Follow the links below to learn how to create ODK Based forms from scratch.

    • WHO VA 2016 Excel form:

WHO has already developed and compiled the WHO VA Questionnaire Excel form and you can convert it to XML form which can be uploaded to various ODK Platforms in the market such as ODK Aggregate, ODK Central, Kobotoolbox, RedCap, CommCare e.t.c.

  2. VA Server setup:
  3. Training package:
    • Kenya VA standards and guideline (Download here for more)

The Kenya VA standards (KeVA) 2019 Standards provide an overview of the structure, content, and scientific basis for the recommended model of VA application in Kenya. Their application will contribute to a more robust, comparable, and high-quality pool of mortality data that can support "evidence-based" planning, monitoring, and priority setting, both at national and subnational levels.

    • VA Interviewer training Manual (Download here for more)

The Verbal Autopsy Interviewers need to be well equiped with knowledge and skills to conduct VA interviews professionally and handle different scenarios in a professional way to ensure quality data is collected. This manual offers a training to the Verbal Autopsy Interviewers on use of the 2016 WHO VA instrument (Questionnaire).

    • VA Question by Question Field Interviewer Guide (Download here for more)

A detailed question by question guide/description for WHO 2016 VA questionnaire questions.

    • VA Supervisors training Manual (Download here for more)

The VA supervisors need to be well versed with VA instrument and VA processes inorder to properly monitor and evaluate data collection processes. This manual has been produced to assist the training of master trainers, and for the training of VA supervisors on the aspects of data collection in the context of CRVS systems, preferably using the electronic version of the 2016 WHO VA instrument.

    • VA Standard Operating Procedures (Download here for more)

The purpose of this Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is to describe the procedures and provide guidance for conducting verbal autopsy to all in the community. It describes the VA interview procedure, supervision structure, the quality control procedures and VA data handling processes.

    • Death reporting Standard operating procedures (SOP): (Download here for more)

Death reporting SOP describes the procedures and provide guidance for identifying, recording and reporting all community deaths. It also describes the quality control procedures for ensuring completeness of mortality reporting.

    • Online Verbal Autopsy course (Training course)

This is a link to an online VA course developed and maintained by Centre for Global Health Research, St. Michael's Hospital and University of Toronto.

    • ODK Technical user guide (Download here for more)

This manual covers ODK components used to collect Verbal Autopsy including ODK server setup, server administration, data collection using ODK Collect and data download using ODK Briefcase.

    • Running Cause Of Death (COD) algorithms (InterVA, InsilicoVA and Tarrif):

There are various cause-coding algorithms that are compatible with the WHO Questionnaire. These algorithms run probabilistic models to produce the most probable causes of death.

  4. VA Data management:
    • VA Data management softwares:

The following softwares once installed help data managers to monitor data collection progress and produce meaningful statistics from VA data.

  5. Existing VA work done
    • Rachuonyo north reporting

This is a detailed report on VA data collection work that was done in Rachuonyo North sub county, Homabay County in 2017. The report shows mortality analysis with causes of death based on InterVA5 algorithm.

    • Landscape assessment reporting

This is a detailed report on current existing implementations of VA in Kenya, the partners that support/fund them and comparisons on the various methodologies used across by the implementing partners.
